The new Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover will launch in Canada later this summer, the German automaker has confirmed.
In Canada, the VW ID.4 will come standard with an 82 kWh battery and a single rear-mounted AC electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. This setup will be good for an estimated range of 400 kilometres according to the US EPA – putting it in about the same ballpark as the Chevy Bolt EV, which is set to be its nearest rival in the Canadian market with regard to performance and pricing.
All versions of the VW ID.4 will support both regular AC charging and DC fast charging. The onboard 11-kW AC charger can fill the battery in about seven and a half hours using a residential wall charger or public charging station. A DC fast charging station can fill the battery from five percent to 80 percent capacity in about 38 minutes.
VW says it will also launch a powerful dual-motor version of the ID.4 in late 2021, which will produce approximately 300 horsepower. The automaker did not say if the dual-motor model will also have a larger battery pack and/or more range than the RWD model.
From a size standpoint, the ID.4 is a bit smaller than the existing VW Tiguan compact crossover. The vehicle is 11 cm shorter than the Tiguan, however the wheelbases are similar, with the ID.4’s only 2 cm shorter. It’s also 4.8 cm lower than a Tiguan, but 1 cm wider.
The ID.4 will available in six exterior colours from launch: Glacier White Metallic, Mythos Black Metallic, Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver Metallic, Blue Dusk Metallic and King’s Red Metallic. VW is also offering an optional equipment group called the Statement Package, which adds a panoramic moonroof, adaptive LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors with LED welcome lights, 20-inch wheels and a contrasting black roof with silver roof rails.
VW says passenger volume in the ID.4 is “similar to Tiguan despite the overall smaller footprint.” Front seat passengers will have 104 cm of legroom, while the rear seats have 96 cm of legroom. Cargo volume is 858 litres behind the second row, and 1,818 L with the seats folded. For comparison, a Tiguan has 1,065 L of cargo room behind the second row and 2,081 L of space with the seats folded flat.
All ID.4 models will come with a 5.3-inch digital driver’s display, which can be controlled via touch-sensitive buttons on the multi-function steering wheel. A 10-inch central infotainment display also comes standard, while a 12-inch display is included with the aforementioned Statement Package. An onboard AI system also allows the user to easily adjust various settings in the vehicle using voice commands and is activated by saying “Hey ID.”
To prove the ID.4 is ready for our country’s long winters, all Canadian-spec models will come with a heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors and washer nozzles, and a heated windshield. “No matter the price point, every ID.4 in Canada is ready for winter,” VW proclaims.
Pricing for the VW ID.4 in Canada starts at $44,995, for the base, rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro model. The ID.4 AWD Pro, meanwhile, will be priced at $49,995. Both the RWD and AWD models can be equipped with the Statement Package, which will add $8,000 to the price. The first ID.4 models to arrive in Canada will go to British Columbia and Quebec, with Ontario set to receive its first examples shortly thereafter.
