Porsche has doubled down on the Macan compact crossover for 2017, adding two new trims to broaden its appeal. Those not needing the rocket-like thrust of a twin-turbocharged V6 will rejoice in a more efficient, cost-effective powertrain. Meanwhile, the GTS trim level makes its first appearance offering a more dialed-in experience for driving enthusiasts.
2017 could very well be described as the year of the four for Porsche. In addition to the new four-cylinder 718 Boxster, the Macan gets its long-awaited four-cylinder engine too. It’s a 2.0-litre direct-injected four cylinder that develops 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and is based on the unit used in the new 2017 Audi A4. Performance is more than adequate with a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds, while fuel consumption dips to 11.6 L/100 km city, 9.3 L/100 km highway. That’s down from 13.7 / 10.4 in the Macan S.
Speaking of which, the Macan S continues on with its 340-hp twin-turbocharged V6, as does the Macan Turbo, which uses a bigger long-stroke 3.6-litre twin-turbo V6. It continues to make 400 hp. The new Macan GTS splits the difference; it gets the 3.0L engine, but has been massaged to produce 360 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, in line with what the BMW X4 M40i and Mercedes-AMG GLC43 produce. The GTS also gets the Turbo’s bigger front brakes, plus standard air suspension that sits 0.4 inches lower to the ground than the standard car. A new GTS-specific front fascia, well-bolstered Alcantara and leather front seats, 20-inch wheels, and plenty of gloss-black exterior trim are all a part of the package.
2017 also sees the release of Porsche’s redesigned PCM infotainment system. The system now boasts a larger 7.0-inch touchscreen with proximity sensor that responds to multi-touch gestures. A repositioned USB port makes plugging smartphones in easier, and Apple CarPlay integration is included. Other enhancements include available on-board internet with mobile wi-fi, plus a Porsche mobile device app that allows for device-to-vehicle communication.
Lastly, Porsche has added a brand new rear-seat entertainment system to the Macan’s option list. The setup includes dual screens, dual USB ports, an SD card reader and an HDMI port. Movies and music can also be streamed to the system via wi-fi.
With its new entry level trim, the Macan’s base price drops to $52,700, and tops out at $85,800 for the mighty Turbo.
