Today marked the premiere of the first production electric vehicle from Jaguar. The I-Pace electric crossover gets a 380 km total range, 400 hp, and a 15-minute charge delivering up to 100 km of range.
The I-Pace uses a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery and a pair of electric motors that can produce 400 hp and 513 lb-ft of torque. That means an estimated range of 380 km on the EPA cycle. The twin-motors allow all-wheel drive, with driveshafts that pass through the motors to save space. Currently rare 100-kW DC fast charging will add 100 km of range in 15 minutes of charging, and it has the ability to charge from 0 to 80 percent in 40 minutes. The regenerative braking system allows one-pedal driving in most situations.
The battery is mounted between the axles, under the floor. It's a new aluminum architecture designed for EV use by Jaguar. It has more rigidity than any other vehicle Jaguar makes.
The I-Pace's styling comes as much from the wind tunnel as it does from Jaguar designer Ian Callum. The elongated, sloping rear roofline is unconventional but helps the SUV cut through the air more smoothly, as do the square rear corners. The short nose takes advantage of the design freedom that comes with losing the gas engine and increases interior space. Vanes in the grille open when more cooling is needed for the batteries.
Active air suspension comes standard, along with JaguarDrive control and torque vectoring. An Adaptive Dynamics system that has continuously variable damping is standard on higher trims. The feature also allows the driver to configure the throttle sensitivity, steering weight, and stiffness.
This is the new template for Jaguar interiors. The rest of the lineup will follow the lead of the inside of the I-Pace. The interior uses high-end interior materials inluding a Kvadrat premium textile interior, recognizing that many who want an EV don't want leather. The electric powertrain means a flat floor for more rear space and a large cargo area under the front console.
It's loaded with tech, including a 4G WiFi hotspot. It's the first Jag to get Jaguar Land Rover's Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. The twin-screen system uses dials and capacitive touch buttons to control the vehicle.
The cabin has six USB-ports to make sure everyone gets a charge. The remote key fob allows the driver to program not just seat settings, but also climate control and stereo settings to each key. Amazon Alexa support can provide in-car assistance as well as let you know charge level and time remaining until full.
The navigation system learns your driving style and has charging stations plotted to help ensure you can get where you need to go. It can also calculate routes that take traffic and terrain into account to provide optimum range. The I-Pace also offers over the air updates to ensure drivers have the latest software.
The I-Pace will launch in three trims in Canada, with an I-Pace First Edition also available. The I-Pace S has the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, Meridian Sound system, fixed panoramic roof, and 18-inch alloys. The SE adds 20-inch wheels, Premium LED headlights, and more safety tech including adaptive cruise, blind spot alerts, and high-speed emergency braking. The top trim HSE model adds special wheels, 18-way heated and cooled Windsor Leather seats, and a 360-degree surround camera.
The I-Pace is available to order now in the UK. Canadian availability and pricing hasn't yet been announced.
