Hyundai designed its new Ioniq 6 EV to be as sleek and aerodynamic as possible. Besides helping it look unique, the streamlined shape also offers impressive efficiency. The automaker has just announced the official Canadian range figures that show exactly how efficient it is.
The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6's most efficient model is the Preferred RWD Long Range model fitted with 18-inch wheels. According to the official Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) test, that model can do a whopping 581 km on a single charge. That's the second-longest range of any EV sold in Canada right now (from the NRCan posted numbers, at least), behind only the six-figure Tesla Model S at 652 km.
Fit that same Ioniq with all-wheel drive (and a second motor) and the range figure drops to a still-stellar 509 km. Finally, add 20-inch wheels and the Ultimate trim level package and the range figure drops to 435 km. Big wheels and tires are stylish, but they kill efficiency and range, even with internal combustion vehicles, though it's not always as obvious.
The Ioniq 6's shape gives the car a drag coefficient of just 0.22. That's an incredibly sleek figure, helped by not just the bodywork but also active air flaps that control air movement, wheel gap reducers to stop wheel well turbulence, full body under shield wind deflectors, and loads of other subtle tricks and changes to cut through the air like a knife.
Hyundai's long-range battery pack for the Ioniq 6 offers 77.4 kWh. It's the same pack used in the Ioniq 5 and can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger.
The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is expected to go on sale this spring, with full pricing to follow.
