The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has made its official global debut after the Korean automaker first previewed the handsome electric sedan’s exterior and interior styling last month.
This new electric “streamliner,” as Hyundai calls it, rides on the same modular E-GMP platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover and will be available with “a range of drive motors and battery packs,” across various trim levels and variants. Details on the model that we’ll receive here in Canada have not yet been confirmed, but this global debut still gives us a good idea of what to expect from Hyundai’s latest zero-emission entry.
The Ioniq 6 will boast an estimated range of 610 kilometers when equipped with the single motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain and long-range 77.4 kWh battery, based on the generous WLTP test cycle. The automaker says the RWD model will also be among the most efficient EVs on sale today, with a consumption rating of 14 kWh/100 km. For reference, the WLTP efficiency rating for the smaller Hyundai Kona EV is 14.7 kWh/100 km.
Models with the long-range battery can also be equipped with a sportier dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, which is rated at an impressive 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque and enables a zero-to-100 km/h time of around 5.1 seconds. Details on other potential powertrain options will be divulged at a later date.
Like the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 can support both 400V and 800V charging infrastructures, with 800V charging as standard. Over-the-air updates for various vehicle modules are also possible, with Hyundai promising improvements to the Ioniq 6 over time.
With a 2,905–mm wheelbase, which is virtually identical to the Porsche Taycan’s wheelbase, and an overall length of 4,855mm, the Ioniq 6 is technically a mid-size sedan, although it has a lower and wider stance than many traditional four-doors. The cabin is described as a spacious “cocoon-like personal space,” by Hyundai’s lead interior designer, Thomas Schemera, with a spacious back seat, a free-floating dashboard, and adjustable ambient lighting. A widescreen display consisting of two separate 12-inch monitors serves as the centerpiece of the cabin and comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Standard advanced driver assistance systems in the Ioniq 6 include Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist system, along with adaptive cruise control, forward collision avoidance, high-beam assist and intelligent speed limit assist, and Remote Smart Parking Assist, among more. Certain trim levels will also come with Evasive Steering Assist and other more advanced collision avoidance systems.
The Ioniq 6 will be available in twelve exterior colors from launch, including Gravity Gold Matte, Abyss Black Pearl, Serenity White Pearl, Curated Silver Metallic, Nocturne Gray Metallic, Nocturne Gray Matte, Transmission Blue Pearl, Biophilic Blue Pearl, Ultimate Red Metallic, Digital Green Pearl, Digital Green Matte, and Byte Blue. The four available interior themes will include dark gray with light gray, dark olive green with light gray, black with pale brown, and black.
Production of the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 will begin in Korea later this year. It’s unclear when Canadian deliveries will commence, although Hyundai says the vehicle will begin arriving on U.S. shores in early 2023.
