New Porsche 911 Carrera T is the Lightest 911

Porsche is expanding the 911 lineup again. This time it's a lighter car with a manual transmission, shorter final drive, and increased performance. Plus it brings back a classic model name.

The Carrera T calls back to the original 911T of 1967. That car was a pared-back model that used a different engine that made less power. Porsche also used smaller carbs, a four-speed manual instead of five, solid brake discs, and no anti-rollbars. It even used steel wheels instead of alloys. The original 911T was the cheap one.

Not so with the new 911 Carrera T. The new model is the lightest 911 that you can buy this year, but it doesn't hold back on the extras. The T gets Porsche Active Suspension Management electronic suspension. That means a 10mm lower ride height. It also has a short-shifter and special seats with a Sport-Tex centre. Rear-steering is an option as well.

Porsche trims weight from the T by using lightweight glass for the rear windshield and three-quarter windows. The doors have fabric loops instead of handles, and some sound insulation has been removed. Option the full-bucket racing seats, and the rear seat gets removed. The radio has also been jettisoned to help shed kilograms.

All that cutting shaves about 20 kg from the standard 911 Carrera.

The engine is from the base 911. It's a 3.0L turbocharged flat-six that makes 370 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. Power is unchanged from the Carrera, but torque grows by 8 lb-ft. The seven-speed manual's slightly shorter final drive takes a tenth off of the 0-100 km/h time. The optional PDK dual-clutch automatic is a little quicker than that.

The 911 Carrera T is now available to order and should arrive at dealers in March.
