Model Overview
A minivan makes a great destination vehicle well-suited to long-haul driving, so it's fitting that Kia names its van after scenic Sedona, Arizona. Kia's Sedona is a lot less interesting to behold, but is a handsome people-mover with a smooth ride and modern powertrain. As is their way, Kia undercuts most of its minivan competitors on price, with the Sedona's value quotient improving the higher you go in the trim range.

I bought my 2009 Kia Sedona in the summer of 2016 with 142,000 km and no accidents. It was perfect when I test drove it, but little things started going wrong after I brought it home. Nothing big at first - just a few plastic pieces broken and other minor electrical glitches - but then the big stuff just started happening in Dec. 2017.
Car was fine one day, the next day it wouldn't start. Just wouldn't start! No crank, nothing. Then, I got it started with a workaround and the engine light is on. Don't have the money at the moment to get it fixed (and I suspect you are considering a Kia Sedona because it's cheaper than a Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey), but at the same time I discovered the windshield wipers weren't working. I believe it's the motor, but that's $200 even if I do all the labour myself. And then a few days ago? The transmission is stuck in 3rd gear! Greeeaaaaaatttttttttttt...
I will never ever ever buy another Kia again. Seriously. There's a reason that a used Kia Sedona is $5,000 cheaper than an equivalent Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey - because you'll end up paying that $5,000 in repairs sooner or later!

Issue:
On certain vehicles, a problem with the transmission shifter assembly may allow you to shift out of the Park position (P) without pressing the brake pedal. If the transmission is shifted without applying the brakes and the parking brake isn't used, the vehicle could move suddenly or roll away.
Safety Risk:
A vehicle that moves suddenly or that rolls away could create the risk of an injury or a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the shift lever assembly. The shift lock lever and holder will be replaced, if necessary. To reduce the safety risk, Kia recommends that you should always use the parking brake when you park.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, the wiring for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) could break. This would cause the airbag system to not turn off the airbag when an infant or child is seated in the front passenger seat. This problem only affects vehicles with a manual front-passenger seat.
Safety Risk:
In a crash, an airbag that deploys in front of an infant or child increases the risk of injury.
Corrective Actions:
The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to remove a wiring harness clip. This will prevent the wire from breaking. If the wiring is found damaged, the dealer will replace the front passenger seat cushion.
Note: If the wiring breaks, the SRS airbag warning light will come on and the "Passenger Airbag Off" indicator will not turn on.

On certain vehicles, the secondary hood latch could corrode, and may result in the mechanical binding of the latch. This could cause the secondary hood latch to remain in the open position when the hood is closed. If the vehicle were to be driven with the primary hood latch disengaged, there is a potential that the secondary hood latch may not hold the hood closed as designed while the vehicle is in motion. If this were to occur, it could compromise the driver’s ability to see the road and its users, as well as cause damage to the windshield. On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. This could prevent proper brake lamp operation. Failure of the brake lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death. A malfunction of the switch may also cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. An improperly positioned harness could make contact with the u-joint assembly of the steering column. Repeated contact may eventually cause the wiring harness insulation to chafe. On certain vehicles, the wiring under the front seats of vehicles equipped with power seats could be misrouted, allowing the wire to be pinched by metal seat components. As a result, electrical resistance will trip a circuit breaker diode in the fuse junction box. After the diode cools down, it will reset and recycle through this process repeatedly. It may be possible for the diode to continue to build up heat instead of cooling down, which may result in a fire in another component in the junction box area. Correction: Dealers will inspect to confirm the integrity of the power seat wiring. In addition, the dealer will install corrugated tubing around the underseat wires to eliminate the possibility of wire pinching.
