Great car, but not a great used car
I bought my 2006 Jetta 2.0t as certified pre-owned vehicle in March 2010 with 71,000 KM. Having already test-driven a 2007 GTI, I knew what to expect from the 2.0L Turbocharged FSI engine. This engine is absolutely brilliant, and is probably the best 4 cylinder engine I have ever driven. It has the smoothness of a v6, and excellent torque down low. Coupled with an excellent steering rack that offers great feel, and precise 6-speed manual, this car is an absolute joy to drive on winding country back roads. The car rides smoothly, and it well insulated, making it a great car for long trips as well. The fuel economy is very good on the highway, but around town it leaves much to be desired, especially if you have a heavy foot.
The interior is beautifully trimmed with high quality materials, and the seats are very comfortable. However, with 114,000 km now on the car, creaks and rattles are starting to appear from all over. The engine is known to have reliability issues, and my car was no exception. A stuttering engine and a check engine light two months after purchase required my car to be stuck at the dealer for two weeks. Thankfully, my certified vehicle came with a two year warranty, and I didnt have to fork out a single penny for the $4,000+ repair. I also had serious issues with rust on both my quarter panels, front right fender, and trunk, which were fixed by VW under warranty (12 year 160,000 KM corrosion/perforation warranty), but once again left my car in the shop for two weeks with no loander provided.
As my title states, this is a great car, but as a used car it leaves much to be desired. The issues I have stated above, coupled with other less major issues (ticking fan, a door that never closes properly even with new hinges, a passenger side mirror that broke due the inside being completely rotted with corrosion...) make me regret my decision to buy this car as a used vehicle.
